Jon Hayward

Jon Hayward:
Jon Hayward is a fine fiddle player who plays mostly Irish music with some French tunes and writes highly evocative songs about his native Shropshire. This entirely solo CD is a very natural sound of a very natural player.

Sleeve Notes by Jon Hayward:

1. The Southernmost of Dales
A song about the Corve Dale - apparently the most southerly Dale in Britain - a Dale where I have spent most of my life and where members of my family have lived for more than five generations. I wrote this song in our hotel room at Sidmouth Folk Festival, August 2003. At the time I found it very emotional.

2. Blarney Pilgrim/ Jig of Slurs/ Kesh Jig
Three traditional Jigs I have played for many years.

3. Sonny's Mazurka/ Jackie Donnan's Mazurka
Two well-known Mazurkas.

4. For Ireland I'll not Tell Her Name
A traditional Irish Air often requested by audiences who like the contrast from the more exuberant numbers.

5. Todd's Sweet Rural Shade
A Irish ballad with a happy ending - I particularly like the poetry in this song.

6. Cooley's/ Rakish Paddy
Two lively reels to raise the pulse.

7. Harvest Home/ Chief O'Neill's Favourite
A couple of well known traditional Hornpipes.

8. Out on the Ocean/ Tripping Upstairs
Two of my favourite jigs.

9. The Road to Dunmoor
A sad song of lost love.

10. The Mouth of the Tobique
French Canadian traditional reel.

11. Fanny Poer
Written by the famous blind Irish Harpist Turlough O'Carolan for the daughter of one of his patrons.

12. Kid on the Mountain/ Another Jig Will Do/ The Butterfly
Traditional Irish slip-jigs which add variation to the rhythm - and make things difficult for the Bodrhans!

13. The Seaweed
An old Music Hall number I collected from Corvedale singer Arthur Lane in the late 1960s. Arthur who was in his late 80s at the time, said he had not learned one song in the 1900s! He knew a lot! He was happy to teach them to me so long as I went on singing them, which I have done ever since - thanks Arthur.

14. Pinch of Snuff
A very lively Reel - dedicated to my good friend John Maguire, an excellent bones player who really gets them rattling to this one!

15. Gaelic Air
I don't know the name of this Air, but I love its haunting melody.

16. The Silver Spear/ St Anne's Reel/ Dick Gossip
Three spirited reels.

17. John Barleycorn
Cyril Tawney once claimed to have collected five versions of this song in one village. It is not sung so much lately, so I thought I would include this version. The origins are lost in the mists of time.

18. The Long Note
A Single Jig which I enjoy playing - something a bit different.

19. O'Carolan's Draught
Another tune from the remarkably prolific 18th century harpist.

20. Harold
Harold South was indeed our local Blacksmith in Brockton for many years. He could turn his hand to almost anything, including mending the church clock. No one talks about him much any more - he's been dead for over ten years. I thought it would be nice to write a song to commemorate his life. I remember him as a man who was always working, yet always had a ready smile and welcome for a visitor. If you wanted a job doing, you had to stay with him as he never wanted to let down the person he was with at the time.
